The Pleiades Incident
This is a Space Game
Mactivity's CD-ROM nr 10 advice: This application did
run on a b/w 68030 processor under System 7.1, but
the behaviour on a ColorScreen of a PowerMacintosh
running System 7.1.2 was not satisfying. Our advice:
use only on 68030 processors, or try with caution
on a 68040 processor
The Mission:
You are the Captain of the Aurora, a military spaceship.
While on routine patrol you received orders to investigate
a "disturbance" in the Pleiades star cluster.
As the simulation starts you are nearing the Pleiades
at high speed and under yellow alert.
The Ambush:
Upon entering the Pleiades star cluster, your ship
is ambushed in a suprise attack by a dozen or so enemy
vessels. The ship's battle computer is unable to identify
them, but the sensors reveal several things about their
technology. Their jamming capabilities are extensive,
but require enormous power levels and are thus unlikely
to be used during combat. The enemy vessels are small
and appear designed for a high top speed, but the warp
drives are undersized and do not produce high accelerations.
Furthermore, their ships are energy limited - their
engines are too small to simultaneously power their
shields, weapons, and warp drives at maximum levels.
All attempts at communication have been ignored. Wherever
they come from, it is probably nearby, so reinforcements
should be expected.
The Simulation:
After the ambush, the game repeatedly cycles through
three modes: defend, command, and attack. In the
defend mode, attacks by the enemy are indicated. In
the command mode, you make your command decisions.
In the attack mode, those decisions are executed.
This cycle of defend, command, and attack (DCA) is
continued until the enemy is defeated or until your
ship is destroyed. Each cycle through the DCA modes
is one move.
The End:
If your shields fall to zero, the game is over and
you lose. To win, you must destroy all the enemy vessels.
If you win, a summary of the simulation is displayed.
The summary consists of the skill level, the severity
of the ambush, and how well you performed.
