Science Jeopardy

This is an Educational Game
Mactivity's CD-ROM nr 10 advice: This application did run on a b/w 68030 processor under System 7.1. It was also tested on a big ColorScreen of a PowerMacintosh running System 7.1.2. The game was also tested on a Quadra with 68040 processor and a 13 inch Color Screen and System 7.1 by Mactivity.

Science Jeopardy is a loose approximation of the trivia game show, intended for use in science classes. A lot of teachers like to use Jeopardy-style games in their classes when students need to review simple facts. This is a HyperCard 2.2 stack (it has color) that allows a teacher to enter his or her own answers and questions so that students can play on a Mac (for those classes lucky enough to have access to Macs) with questions relating to whatever they are studying. This stack is meant to be used for education, so I don't mind if you distribute it (in fact, I'd be glad if you did). I'm distributing it for free, so please don't sell it, either alone or as part of any bundle (it's not sophisticated enough for anyone to want to buy anyways). If you're not a science teacher but want to use it in another class (say, history), feel free to modify the title card to suit your subject area.
Playing the Game:
Providing questions to the answers is the only real procedural similarity to the game show. There are no timers, no buttons to hit to see who gets to answers. There are two rounds, and there is no big final question. Turns go in order and change when someone gets one wrong. Perhaps someday I'll have time to make an updated version with timers, etc. When students select a topic and value (e.g. Planets for 200), they are presented with the answer and a prompt to the question (e.g. "The fourth planet from the sun. --What is __". After typing in a response, they must hit the return key. If they are correct, they are awarded the points and may select another. If they are wrong, the correct question is displayed at the bottom of the card, points are subtracted and the turn goes to the next player. Students must type in questions EXACTLY as they have been pre-entered by you. If you include question marks, then the students must type them too! (The sample topics provided in the stack include question marks.) When students are basically correct but don't type in the answer exactly, they can press the "Overrule Judge" button to get back the turn and their points.
Adding and Deleting Topics:
The stack comes with 12 topics already entered (6 are used in each round) just so you can see how the stack works. By deleting these and entering your own you can tailor the game to whatever your students are studying. To delete or add topics, switch to the "Teacher Menu" by selecting it from the "Menus" menu. You will be presented with a message asking for the password. It is preset to "teacher". (If you know HyperCard scripting, or know someone who does, you can change this to your own password easily in the stack script.) This will add the "Edit", "Go", and "Add Topic" menus. Each topic (and the six associated Q&A's) is stored on a separate card. To delete a topic, select "Next" from the "Go" menu until you see the topic and questions, then select "Delete" from the "Edit" menu. (Make sure you don't delete the fifth card in the stack, which is an blank "form" used for filling in your own topics and questions.) To add a topic, simple select "Add Topic" from the "Topic" menu. You will be brought to a blank form for filling in your own material. Make sure your entries fit within the fields or they won't be completely displayed on the game card. There must be at least 12 topics filled out for a full game (or there will be blank topics, and the game will get messed up).
Good luck. If you have any comments or suggestions, you can e-mail me at the address on top until May 20, 1994 (after that I will have graduated and probably won't have e-mail access any more :!(
